Every home owner needs a list of certain contractors to call in case of an emergency. If an emergency arises, and a contractor has not already been selected, chances are the first one, or the cheapest one that answers the phone will get the job. This could end in disaster, as not all contractors are considered equal. This is true for plumbers as well, so finding the perfect one should be done well before a disaster arises.
There are a variety of ways to find the perfect plumber for your home:
- Ask friends and family
- Check online reviews
- Make phone calls
- Ask plenty of questions
Ask family and friends if they have a plumber they trust, and if they do, get the number. Working with someone who has a personal referral from someone you know is often the best way to find someone you will like working with.
If you have no one to ask, or you are new to the area, check online reviews. The Internet is a great place to find local businesses, as well as to get customer reviews on their products and services. Do not let the reviews completely guide your decision, but it is a great place to start.
Check out the plumber’s website and find out what services they offer. It is a good idea to find a plumber that can handle large jobs, as well as small ones, and one that offers emergency service.
Contact the plumbing companies you select to get a better feel for the company. By calling you are able to determine if the company is professional, friendly and experienced. The tone of the person answering the phone often dictates the overall tone of the company. If the person on the phone is rude and acts bothered by your questions, you can expect the plumber sent out to your home will have the same poor attitude.
Do not be afraid to ask questions. There is no dumb questions, so if the person on the other end of the phone treats you as an annoyance, move on to another company.
Some questions you may not think of to ask, but that are important, include:
- Are your plumber’s drug tested and background checked?
- Is your company fully insured and bonded?
- Do plumbers arrive in a company truck or van?
- Is the van or truck stocked with parts, or do parts require a special trip or order process?
- Do you offer emergency service?
- What is your after-hours fee?
- Are all plumbers licensed or certified?
Asking the right questions can help determine whether or not you hire the right plumber or plumbing company. Just because the company may have all the right answers, you still need to check them out online, read reviews, and possible ask for a referral from their previous clients if you’re planning any large jobs.
